Vista Performance Brief: Optimizing Graphics Performance
Overview To deliver its powerful and appealing new desktop, Vista utilizes a completely new display driver model called WDDM. Written on top of DirectX instead of GDI (as in previous versions of Windows did) Vista can provide a 3D-like desktop. In the new scheme it is now WDDM that allocates and manages memory for each surface instead of the driver. This is uncharted territory for all involved. The drivers supporting Vista are new and need a few refinements to achieve performance comparable with older versions of Windows after years of refinement. A number of performance factors were considered in the course of this investigation, including memory overhead, driver speed, Aero preferences and multi-application performance.
