Database Management White Papers

Solutions for Large IMS Databases

Overview When IMS databases reach their size limit, one can change the database structure or implement compression or both. Choose option based on how one use the data and how much time one have to change it. Start with the simplest methods. Change the access method for full-function databases from VSAM to OSAM, and implement compression. (One can do both of these at the same time.) If these don't work, consider moving to HALDB or Fast Path. If one have some DEDBs already, converting other databases to Fast Path may be a good idea.
