Improving BIOS Debugging Using USB 2.0 Methods: Moving Beyond POST Checkpoints

Overview The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) on modern computers, whether based on legacy BIOS standards or Unified EFI (UEFI), send debug checkpoints during the initialization and boot process. Checkpoints are valuable for platform diagnostics and quality assurance. The current method of using a PCI card to display checkpoints has a number of limitations, especially with the industry shifting away from PCI expansion slots in favor of expansion using serial bus standards. As the industry moves to smaller system designs, the traditional PCI checkpoint card is not the ideal diagnostic solution. This white paper describes how AMI solves the checkpoint problem using AMI Debug Rx and other innovative USB-based debug solutions.
