University Uses Virtualization to Create More Responsive, Cost-Effective Data Center
Overview The Universidade de Sorocaba (UNISO), in Sorocaba, Brazil, responded to the tough 2008 economy by tightening budgets and consolidating three data centers to one. To do that, it employed Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V virtualization technology to slash its server count from 24 to 5. The move not only saved money, but also gave the IT staff much greater agility in meeting the university's needs. Using Microsoft System Center data center solutions, UNISO can proactively monitor its servers, dynamically transfer workloads to improve performance, and reliably back up data, yielding higher application availability. UNISO has reduced data center energy and cooling costs by 40 percent, real estate needs by 70 percent, and software licensing costs by 60 percent using a Microsoft Campus Agreement. It can also more easily comply with governmental regulations.
