Overview With 75% of attacks targeting Web applications, hacking has evolved into big business where stolen data carries a large dollar value. As a result, many regulatory groups are acknowledging this problem by creating Web application security specific compliance requirements. The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS) is one such example. It was designed in an attempt by the credit card companies to protect cardholder members by insisting that vendors maintain secure electronic commerce. And these standards have recently evolved to now include updated requirements that mandate merchant bolster Web-facing applications to protect against known attacks or face the risk of non-compliance. Failure to comply may result in fines, restrictions or permanent expulsion from card acceptance programs.
