Are Men 'Cleverer' Than Women?: Deconstructing the Dogma of Female Intellectual Inferiority
Overview This paper analyses discourses surrounding gender and the politics of Intelligence Quotient (IQ). It takes the position that the content of the news not always constitute factual account of the world but instead it imposes socio-economic ideological values. The analyzed data consists of an article drawn from a news webpage. This text is linked to contemporary research on I.Q. and reflects the complex and subtle discursive work surrounding gender inequalities. It is found in this paper that Discourse Analysis (DA) may provide useful insights into understanding the complex, fluid and dynamic relationship between researcher and participant. However, this methodology poses serious challenges to the researcher, since that by invalidating any truth or reality it risks sliding into a nihilistic relativism.
