Recent Progress and Standardization of Terrestrial Wireless and Satellite Communication Systems
Overview This paper overviews the recent progress and standardization of terrestrial wireless and satellite communication systems. The terrestrial wireless systems are now standardized by ITU-R SG5 in the area of IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced, land mobile systems, aeronautical mobile systems and fixed wireless access systems. This paper focuses on the free-space optical communication systems which can transmit a very high-speed data and describes their characteristics which are discussed within not only ITU-R WP5C but also international conferences. The inter-orbit optical communication systems which utilize the advantages of optical transmission features as a high capacity transmission link are also introduced. Finally, the new architectures for both fixed and mobile satellite communication systems are discussed within ITU-R WP4B.
