Multimedia Services in IEEE 802.11e WLAN Systems

Overview With the increasing demands on real-time services in a Wireless LAN system, it is critical that the controls provided in WLAN are sufficient to ensure the required QoS. In this study, besides the EDCF and HCF control algorithms defined in the IEEE 802.11e, an enhanced timer-based control algorithm is proposed to effectively manage the delay budget. A simulation platform is developed to quantify the QoS performance and provides a frame work for developing new QoS control algorithms. The comparison between the proposed control algorithms and the traditional EDCF and HCF controls are also evaluated.
