Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS): Next Generation Networks

Overview Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) describe a mechanism for packet forwarding in network routers. It was originally developed to offer faster packet forwarding than traditional IP routing and architecture's shortcoming, although improvements in router hardware have abridged the importance of speed in packet forwarding. However, the flexibility of MPLS has direct to it becoming the default way for modern networks to achieve Quality of Service (QoS), Next Generation VPN services, and optical signaling. MPLS offers fast, reliable, efficient, and consistent performance and has greatly contributed scalable solutions for large and growing networks. MPLS technology mainly concerns reliability and efficient transmission of data, however protecting this data in case of a failure is similarly important.
