Fragments: A Lightweight Extension of Java for Pattern Matching
Overview Objects in Object Oriented Programming (OOP) are of a different nature. Such languages typically allow programmers to construct objects from parameters that may serve as input for computing the initial values of the object's fields but are not necessarily representative of the object's fields themselves. Thus, the implementation of a pattern matching feature in an imperative OOP such as Java is non-trivial. As one possible solution, the authors propose Fragments, an extension to Java that allows the programmer to incorporate pattern matching functionality. Using Fragments, programmers specify patterns for deconstructing the objects belonging to a class.
