Epistemic Communities, Situated Learning and Open Source Software Development
Overview Open source software development is an interesting phenomenon where people contribute to development of computer software and most often receive no economic reward at all. This paper analyses open source software development as an epistemic community where each individual open source software project is perceived as a single epistemic community. Open source software development is a learning process where the involved parties contribute to, and learn from the community. It is discovered that theory of epistemic communities does indeed contribute to the understanding of open source software development. But, the important learning process of open source software development is not readily explained by the epistemic community's theory.
