Denial of Service - Understanding Attack Techniques
Overview DDoS attacks pose a serious threat to the availability of any online application or service that is delivered over the public Internet. These attacks, which are launched against web sites, DNS services, e-commerce applications, VoIP services, online gaming and financial services, block customers' access to these applications, inflicting severe financial losses on enterprises and carriers who run them. DDoS attacks today are more sophisticated and virulent than ever. Attackers are using viruses and worms such as Code Red, Netsky and Bagle worm variants, to install BOT (distributed-DOS relay kits) on compromised machines. These techniques provide attackers with the ability to orchestrate massive distributed DOS attack using several thousand remotely controlled "Bots" machines.
