Wireless LAN White Papers
Overview of WLAN Security
Overview The purpose of this paper is to give insight into current security solutions of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The WLAN architecture is based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard. The paper will survey the security services provided in the standard as well as some other current approaches and discuss their weaknesses. However, the paper does not cover all solutions currently available nor it will go to mathematical or cryptographical details. Some future work is also briefly presented. The paper will point out the security threats inherently arising from the wirelessness and estimate whether the solutions presented can eliminate the threats.
