Overview The convergence of computing and communications is becoming ever more a reality, enabling a large number of potential new applications and opportunities. Such "Anytime - anywhere" computing relies on the ability to share information freely between applications, systems and their users. However, this conflicts with security objectives to prevent information getting into the wrong hands. This conflict is particularly acute in high assurance, multilevel security environments. This Paper gives an overview of the history of approaches to this problem, as well as some indications of where the future may lie.
