Virtual Villains of Security & PCI Compliance: Future Challenges of MPLS, Virtual Machines and VLANs
Overview
Compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) will continue to change and adapt to mitigate the risk of compromised card holder information. Due to the ever changing landscape of security, a proactive stance towards threats and compliance needs to be taken. Organizations are increasing the use of virtualization of OSI layers two through seven. Virtualization for both the server and network environments should be closely evaluated as it relates to the overall security infrastructure and program of an organization.
The areas of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), and Virtual Machine (VM) technology all relate to current PCI requirements. A closer look at each of these areas will give a greater insight to how they integrate into existing infrastructures and what security concerns should be raised when evaluating them. Each area is organized with the following sections:
- Introduction & PCI Concerns
- Security Concerns with the technology
- Solutions and guidelines for addressing the security concerns and PCI compliance issues
