Why Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Should Be Used in IP-Based Networks
Overview The demand for multimedia applications along with rapid growth, the need for quality of service, reliability, efficiency and security have made traffic engineering an essential consideration in the design and operation of large public Internet backbone networks. Moreover, the rapid proliferation of the Internet has established the IP protocol suite as the predominant networking technology. With IP's incumbent nature it is also predicted that the convergence of voice and video will happen over IP-based networks. Therefore, a need for enhancing IP based networks becomes a necessity. One method of enhancing IP-based networks is to combine elements of the Open System Interconnection Model (OSI), specifically between the Link Layer (Layer 2) and the Network Layer (layer 3).
