Fault Restoration Techniques for MPLS With QoS Constraints
Overview This paper investigates distributed fault restoration protocols for MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) that automatically reroute label switched paths in the event of failures while maintaining Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Protocols for link restoration, partial path restoration, and path restoration are evaluated. A new adaptive approach to selecting backup routes is proposed to maximize the probability of successful restoration and minimize restoration time. Using the concept of equivalent bandwidth, an integer linear program is developed that determines a set of backup paths that meets the QoS constraints, and minimizes the total capacity needed. In computational tests, commercial software successfully solved problem instances of this model in under six seconds on a 600 MHz DEC AlphaStation.
