Coexistence Issues in Cognitive Radios Based on Ultra-Wide Bandwidth Systems

Overview This paper discusses the basic concepts underlying Cognitive Radio (CR) and investigates the Ultra Wide Bandwidth (UWB) technology as one of the enabling transmission techniques for the implementation of CR systems. Firstly, the paper proposes an analytical methodology to assess the interference impact and coexistence issues between NarrowBand (NB) and UWB communication systems in a realistic scenario. Then, based on this methodology the paper shows the great potential of the UWB technology in adapting the transmitted spectrum to counteract NB interference and at the same time to guarantee low spectral emissions over existing narrowband communications.
