10G Ethernet Adoption in Volume Servers

Overview When forecasting the adoption of next-generation Ethernet technologies, the question is not if but when the technology reaches broad deployment. One can draw some lessons from past technology transitions, but 10GbE presents some new challenges, and server technology is evolving at the same time. Sold as NICs, initial 10GbE server products have addressed only the most demanding applications. Server vendors are offering these expensive products only as options, while GbE remains the standard for LOM and server blades alike. But blade servers represent a new and exciting opportunity for 10GbE controllers. By eliminating the need for a 10GBase-T PHY, server-blade mezzanine cards greatly reduce the barriers to 10GbE adoption.
