Design of Ethernet-Based IR Controller for Smart Home

Overview Intelligent devices are growing popular in home applications, but legacy devices remain the main streams of home appliances. Whether these home appliances are legacy or intelligent, infrared (IR) remains the important remote control media. However, Ethernet has been widely deployed in home networking, and it is widespread use in most of the smart home technologies. To cope with this change, the paper proposes a low cost and effective Ethernet-based IR control scheme for incorporating smart functions into the home appliances. The core of this scheme is to design an Ethernet-based IR controller which consists of an IR decoder for decoding three main streams IR coding standards: RC-5, RECS 80/RC-4 and NEC.
