Integrating Ethernet in Carrier Class Networks

Overview Service providers are experiencing a variety of processing demands for handling the growth of Ethernet traffic in converged IP networks in both metro and core environments. IP convergence, with its operational and service agility efficiencies, is leading the way for next generation multiservice offerings. In access networks, and through much of the metro, the emerging winner is Ethernet. But the requirements here are very different from LAN Ethernet. They include hierarchical QoS, logical interface scalability, high performance and high availability guarantees, and other services to support multiplay. A variety of circuit-oriented constraints such as oversubscription and committed/peak transmission rates - traditionally associated with WAN technologies such as ATM and frame relay - have also emerged as Ethernet requirements.
