Instant Traffic Matrix on Ethernet Switches
Overview This paper proposes a new method of estimating real-time traffic matrices for Ethernet switches. A traffic matrix represents the traffic volumes between the origin and the destination in a network. The matrix is an indispensable tool for capacity planning and traffic engineering. However, it is difficult to make an accurate traffic matrix because of measurement cost and computational complexity. The method, called Spike Flow Management (SFM), reduces the measurement cost and the complexity by focusing on spikes. A spike is a transient excessive uses of a communication link. SFM finds a spike flow which is a pair of incoming and outgoing spikes in a network.
