MPLS Private Network Technology and Level 3

Overview MPLS stands for Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is a technology that improves the traditional packet-forwarding model. In the traditional model, the packet header is analyzed at each hop as the packet travels from router to router. MPLS, on the other hand, uses a process called label swapping to transport packets across the network. The benefit of label swapping is that the packet header information is analyzed only once. This occurs as the packet enters the network at the Label Edge Router (LER).
