Deep Inspection: Next Generation Firewall Technology

Overview Stateful inspection firewalls are the most-widely used defense against hackers. Unfortunately, they are increasingly ineffective in preventing attacks, as the bulk of new web attacks are happening at the application layer. Stateful inspection firewalls were never designed to protect against web application attacks. A new generation of deep inspection firewalls is emerging to address the growing threat to web applications. This paper provides a brief background on firewall technologies, and then describes the four foundation principles of deep inspection technology.
