Best Practices: Enabling Secure Networking
Overview Layer 2, IPSec, and SSL technologies compliment one another within the encryption market - each predominantly serves a different purpose. Layer 2 solutions are designed to connect networks to networks, while SSL VPNs connect people to networks. SSL is distinct from both IPSec and Layer 2 access technologies in that SSL is well suited for connecting many mobile and relatively low-bandwidth end points (e.g., people). This is in contrast to the use of IPSec and Layer 2 protection approaches that are designed to connect larger, higher bandwidth, and typically static networks. IPSec is a bridging technology that can actually perform all of the aforementioned functions, but is best suited to connecting many sites to each other across public networks.
