Web Services White Papers

Beyond the Obvious Web Services

Overview Component Object Model (COM) came into existence to enable developers to write applications which are formed from pre-built parts, or components. Basically they are the physical binary implementations of the business object. The first technical challenge of COM is how to locate the component on a computer or network and, once located, to execute the component. The locating of components is also referenced as a directory service for the components. If no such standards exist, overhead costs of learning to use components is very high. This paper examines the technology evolution from COM to Web Services and how Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) can make a big difference to existing enterprise architecture.
