Municipality Reduces Backup Time by 96 Percent, Gives Users File Restore Capabilities
Overview The Bureau of Motor Equipment (BME) for New York City's Department of Sanitation manages and maintains a fleet of 6,000 vehicles and other equipment. From its data center in Woodside, the IT department for BME delivers services to the bureau's four borough repair shops and the Central Repair Shop. Data backup and recovery tasks were becoming increasingly challenging, with backup jobs running too long and administrators spending up to 50 percent of their time recovering lost files. In August 2004, the department began testing the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM), a disk-based backup application that provides near continuous data protection by backing up data changes at the byte level.
