Using Color Effectively in System Models: Learn to Follow Simple Guidelines When Applying Color in Diagrams
Overview Using color in software model diagrams is an important aspect of creating effective diagrams. Although applying color to a diagram can be as straightforward as selecting a choice from a drop-down menu, proper color use requires careful consideration of many factors. Color can be a double-edged sword. Used correctly, it can dramatically improve the communicative power and information content of a diagram or model. Applied haphazardly, color can destroy all aesthetic appeal, even to the point that a diagram will be rejected as unusable. This paper provides specific guidelines to follow when using color in diagrams, though the final arbiter must always be the discerning eye.
