Supporting Server Consolidation Takes More Than WAFS
Overview Driven both by the need to reduce cost and gain more control over the IT infrastructure, the majority of enterprises have begun to consolidate their servers into central data centers. However, the initial implementations of server consolidation demonstrated that applications such as Microsoft Office that rely on the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol perform poorly in this type of environment. To compensate for this poor performance, the IT industry has developed a solution that is referred to as Wide Area File Services (WAFS). WAFS attempts to overcome some of the aspects of the CIFS protocol that make it inappropriate to run over a wide area network.
