VPNs White Papers

University Improves Remote Access, Cuts IT Costs, and Enhances Student Experience

Overview To provide the best educational environment it can, a major public university offers its students access to specialized applications by installing software on student systems and providing remote access over a Virtual Private Network (VPN). But deploying the software was costly and labor-intensive, and the expanding VPN connections created security concerns. The university wanted to increase access to essential applications without compromising its security standards, while simplifying administration and cutting costs. The university deployed Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 Enterprise to provide students with better remote access while eliminating the need for a VPN. With Windows Server 2008, the university simplified its network administration, cut maintenance costs, tightened network security, and is enhancing the overall academic experience of its students.
