Active Storage Processing in a Parallel File System

Overview This paper proposes an extension of the traditional active disk concept by applying it to parallel file systems deployed in modern clusters. Utilizing processing power of the disk controller CPU for processing of data stored on the disk has been proposed in the previous decade. This paper has extended and deployed this idea in context of storage servers of a parallel file system, where substantial performance benefits can be realized by eliminating the overhead of data movement across the network. In particular, the proposed approach has been implemented and tested in context of Lustre parallel file system used in production Linux clusters at PNNL.
