Challenges for 10Gb/s Implementation on UTP Media

Overview Responding to the need for 10Gb/s data rates, the industry and IEEE have recently concluded several years of work to create a standard for 10Gb/s optical Ethernet. This standard, however, does not incorporate any option for copper media for LANs-all options involve fiber-optic media. The higher costs of fiber-based solutions have acted as a brake on the marketplace adoption of 10Gb/s Ethernet for use in data centers and other Enterprise applications. At first, it was thought that a 10Gb/s solution for the twisted pair copper infrastructure would not be possible. Solarflare Communications has developed an innovative Physical Layer [PHY] solution for standard UTP cable to meet this market need and complete the 10 gigabit Ethernet media options.
