Cisco and IBM Provide High-Voltage Grid Operator With Increased Reliability and Manageability of Its Telecommunication Infrastructure

Overview Terna wanted to eliminate grid blackout risks induced by possible telecommunications failures and improve quality of service and meet stringent target of Energy Not Supplied. The challenge was to replace ageing, expensive ATM network with faster, more reliable MPLS. There was back-up IP network over power lines supplements superior MPLS functionality. Forward Error Control patch-panel solution with Asset Lifecycle Management and Joint Cisco-IBM team covering development, implementation and maintenance was deployed.
