Intrusion Detection System Honeypots

Overview With the immense popularity of the Internet and the growing number of households with a broadband Internet connection more and more computers are being attacked by hackers, script-kiddies and malware. To be able to keep the network clean of these illegitimate activities one has to monitor the network so one can take actions against these activities gets detected. Honeypots are systems which can be used for these goal activities when they get detected. SURFnet is a Internet Service Provider for research centers, school and universities and connects these connected parties to the Internet. SURFnet is rolling out a Distributed Intrusion Detection System (D-IDS) to detect illegitimate network activity in the LANs of the connected parties.
