Server Consolidation Improves IT's Capacity Utilization
Overview Whether one's company has 300 employees or 30,000, chances are that the data center has far more servers than one actually need. Indeed, the Gartner Group estimates that the capacity utilization of servers in a typical company hovers around 20 percent. The remaining 80 percent is largely wasted. Capacity utilization describes the ratio of a factory's actual production to its full potential. In an economic expansion, 85 percent capacity utilization is considered full employment. In a recession, capacity utilization hovers around 70 percent. Think of the data center as a factory that processes information. Like any factory, its capacity utilization rate may be low or high. The more efficient the data center, the higher its capacity utilization.
