Software-as-a-Service Through Virtualization
Overview This paper, presents a specific architecture implementation to deliver Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) through virtualization, and is accompanied by a live, interactive demonstration. The approach to delivering SaaS is an amalgamation of "Best Practices" from several industry leaders: IBM, NetApp, VMware, Cisco, and Qlusters. The paper identifies trends within the Software-as-a-Service movement (both past and present) to understand its roadmap. Furthermore, the architecture's value proposition is presented in terms of flexibility, application deployment ramp-up time, scalability, and total cost of ownership. The demonstration illustrates delivery of software (both applications and operating systems) hosted from within a virtualization environment. However, instead of storing a Virtual Machine's (VM) hard-disk image locally, each VM connects via Ethernet to a disk image stored on a Storage Area Network (SAN).
