An Analysis of Storage Virtualization Architectures

Overview Virtualization and Volume management are two terms that represent technologies that are very similar, yet with important differences, and both have a great deal of potential to solve problems for IT organizations. They can be applied to increase the utilization of storage subsystems, extend the scalability of storage volumes and increase the availability of data. The point of putting storage on a network in the first place is to leverage the communications capabilities networks offer. Architectures that get the most from network connectivity without sacrificing the criteria for high-availability and performance will be the most effective. This paper analyzes the architectural differences between the main virtualization and volume management approaches and expresses an opinion about which of them are likely to be the most effective and useful.
