The Role of Mobile Operators and the Java Platform in the Machine-to-Machine Market

Overview The ever-broadening geographic coverage of wireless data networks is stimulating the growth of a new generation of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications. M2M devices use integrated radios to exchange data with other machines over existing cellular networks. Once the domain of remote telemetry devices using expensive satellite or fixed-frequency radios, now virtually any device can be networked over mobile operators' GSM networks. In Spain, ice cream vending machines communicate with the vendor's logistics center so that machines can be restocked more efficiently. In Canada, M2M parking stations can lower parking rates during holiday shopping periods, prohibit parking during special events, track which slots are out of time, and relay that information to enforcement officials with wireless PDAs.
