IBM eServer pSeries 690 With the HPC Feature: Targeted for the Demands of the High Performance Computing Customer

Overview This paper describes a feature of the IBM eServer pSeries 690 targeted for the High Performance Computing (HPC) customer whose application workload requires high memory bandwidth for better performance and throughput. This HPC feature offers up to 30 to 45 percent increased performance benefit on certain HPC applications over the same sized base p690 without the HPC feature. Examples of application areas that are expected to enjoy such benefits include computer aided engineering crash and structural analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), petroleum reservoir modeling, computational chemistry, and ocean modeling. The p690 with the HPC feature is offered as an 8-way or 16-way SMP, and has all the benefits of the p690 including fast 1.3 GHz POWER4TM processors, Logical Partitioning Capability (LPAR), self-managing features, and AIX 5.1 support.
