Microsoft Exchange Server 2003: Storage Performance Characterization of HP Smart Array P600 SAS Vs. HP SA6402 Ultra3 SCSI Controllers

Overview This paper provides a performance comparison between an HP Smart Array P600 controller with 10K RPM SAS drives and an HP Smart Array 6402 (SA6402) controller configured with 10K RPM Ultra 3 SCSI drives and with 15K RPM Ultra320 SCSI drives. The results of these comparisons demonstrate the benefits of using serial attached SCSI (SAS) as a viable solution for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 storage. Exchange servers are highly sensitive to I/O latency; a slow performing or improperly configured storage subsystem can have a substantial impact on Exchange server performance and client response times. Typical Exchange deployments are done using direct attached SCSI drives or fibre-based SAN storage arrays. Many of the latest HP ProLiant server models are shipping with either SCSI or SAS models.
