HP StorageWorks MSA1000 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Performance and Characterization Testing

Overview A high performance deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 requires a complete and thorough evaluation of each infrastructure component that composes the solution. From server to network to storage design, Exchange 2003 performance is bounded by the performance of the weakest component. A customer may install Exchange 2003 on the latest and greatest server platform, only to be bottlenecked by an improper storage configuration that does not meet the IO demands (such as throughput, latency, data rate, etc.) of the application. The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimal configuration for Exchange 2003 database drives on the HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array 1000 (MSA1000) in terms of IOPS (Input/Output per second) throughput performance, within a defined latency threshold of 20 ms.
