Microsoft Outlook: Security Features and Vulnerabilities

Overview Microsoft Outlook has been a favorite victim of virus makers for its relatively easy access to the user's address book. The "Love Bug" and the "Melissa" viruses were mainly perpetuated using Outlook. The Preview pane's default setting allows the execution of attached code, which is most likely a virus which would send itself to the user's contact list. This paper discusses the security features and vulnerabilities of Microsoft Outlook. It examines the structure of the address book, and the method in which most viruses spread. Different ways are suggested to prevent these security holes.
