PKI Support in Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003: Secorvo White Paper
Overview Microsoft has made Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) functionality a core component of its security architecture since Windows 2000. While this is undoubtedly an important step, the focus of the PKI functionality is clearly on integrated support in a Microsoft environment. Microsoft also provides some neat solutions (e.g. for distributing trustworthy CA certificates) to issues that can often only be resolved with a great deal of difficulty in other environments. Microsoft follows a similar path to that of Lotus Notes a few years ago, with the difference that Microsoft's PKI is more open and in greater conformity with standards than the solution offered by Lotus Notes.
