With Solid Modeling, Heatcraft Delivers Manufacturing Drawings and Bills of Materials for Air Conditioners Twice as Fast as Using 2D CAD

Overview Heatcraft Australia wanted to take over production of sister company's air conditioner line. The challenge was to boost product quality which re-creates manufacturing documentation to improve production accuracy and have documentation ready for production start-up in six months. The division decided to use solid modeling instead, choosing Solid Edge in part because it appeared to have the shortest learning curve. (Its sheet metal capabilities were also important.) The draftsmen modeled each AC unit - internal assembly and sheet metal cover - in solids, then checked the models thoroughly for interferences. They took advantage of Solid Edge's sheet metal tools to automatically unfold complicated parts. Only when they were sure the models were accurate did they spin off 2D views for manufacturing.
