Overview Precision is key for Hinckley to design stronger, faster and safer yachts. The company wanted machinery, tanks and other equipment must be creatively arranged below the deck to make the best use of space. Their challenge was to convey information to subcontractors by means of drawings was limited and sometimes resulted in miscommunication with no easy way to check fit in 2D, Hinckley erred on the side of caution but lost space as a result. The company replaced 2D CAD with 3D to create assembly models representing all the interior components, wooden elements as well as plumbing and mechanical systems and evaluated several mainstream CAD systems for their ability to manage very large assemblies to find system that could reliably import the Hinckley's legacy data.
