Packet Engines and Swedish multimedia company Utfors are setting up a Metropolitan Area Network between Stockholm and Uppsala. The Gigabit Ethernet network will begin a series of extensive tests this morning.
Direct marketing company, Brann has installed a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) based on Gigabit Ethernet running over fibre. The Bristol MAN uses Foundry Networks Biglrona 4000 switching routers, and was set up by systems integrator, MiTech.
Its latest report card shows it prospering in local area networks (LANs) and advancing on new territories outside its most popular domain - starting with the metropolitan area network (MAN), and the fibre-centric wide area network (WAN) thereafter.
In the metropolitan and wide area networks (MAN and WAN) MPLS has a bright future. Multi protocol label switching, sexily tagged MPLS, is the juvenile standard being developed to give service providers better control over networks.
Ethernet services will offer enterprises the ability to simply plug into a relatively inexpensive Ethernet port for simplified metropolitan networking with the added bonus of almost instantly upgradeable IP bandwidth by the megabit.
The deal will help STSN supply virtual private network (VPN) connections using multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) for flexibility to various premises, which can then offer guests high-speed wireline and wireless internet access.
