Virginia Revitalizes Its Communities With Optical Networking

Overview The Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC) was established in November 2003 to support the revitalization of southside Virginia by providing rural communities access to broadband telecommunications that would spur economic development. Many independent telecommunication companies service the area, but no single provider offered service throughout the south - let alone high-speed access. The Governor of Virginia recognized that broadband communications could help economic viability by giving new communications services to area residents as well as attracting industry and skilled workers to the region. A national model for rural economic development leveraging the multiservice capabilities of Nortel's Optical Multiservice Edge and Optical Metro 3500 to support voice, video, data and storage traffic on the same network.
