Caltech and Partners Build a High-Speed Network for Global High-Energy Physics Collaboration

Overview With a faculty that includes four Nobel laureates and off-campus facilities such as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Palomar Observatory, and W. M. Keck Observatory, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is considered one of the world's greatest research centers. Caltech wanted to build an ultra high-speed, end-to-end managed network to demonstrate the feasibility of a worldwide physics research network. The challenge was to connect research partners around the world and facilitate next-generation, data-intensive collaborative research and the development of next-generation grid systems. The company deployed Cisco IP intelligent switched network, including Cisco 7600 Series routers and Cisco Catalyst 6509-E switches.
