The Design and Implementation of a Dual-Stack Mobile Network Using IPv6 Only Network Infrastructure

Overview This paper discusses a mechanism which enables network mobility (NEMO) in both IPv4 and IPv6. There is an IETF standard NEMO protocol, NEMO Basic Support (NEMO BS). However it is designed only for IPv6 mobile networks. The basic concept of NEMO BS is a kind of dynamic tunnel configuration protocol. NEMO BS assumes that only IPv6 packets are passed over the tunnel. This paper permits to forward IPv4 packets over the configured tunnel created by NEMO BS too, and it adds a mechanism to exchange IPv4 network information between a mobile router and its home agent. With this mechanism, one can obtain a dual-stack mobile network even if the mobile router does not have access to an IPv4 access network.
