IMS Primer: Enabling Enhanced Service Delivery
Overview The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), defined by 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards and organizations based on IETF Internet protocols, is an IP multimedia and telephony core network. The IMS offers Service Providers a complete access independence because it can support IP to IP session over wireline IP, 802.11, 802.15, CDMA, and packet data over GSM/EDGE/UMTS. A structured multimedia service architecture, such as the IMS will allow the Service Providers and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) enhance their revenue by facilitating: an improved subscriber service discovery with the help of an easy-to-use GUI, a reduced time-to-market for custom services by using a standard reference architecture, creation of easy-to-use, integrated services for high potential market segments and concurrent services, such as voice calling and picture messaging.
